This post is long overdue, but I am so excited to share my very first fabric collection, On The Road Again, which I licensed with Wilmington Prints! It is available in specialty quilt shops, as well as numerous online fabric shops. Last week, I received a box of samples of each fabric in the collection from Wilmington. From the Heart

From the Heart

My youngest brother, Kyle, is graduating from Butler University next weekend. He was born with a heart condition called Tetralogy of Fallot. In 2013, he was rushed to the hospital in Indianapolis with ventricular tachycardia. Paramedics used an AED to save his life in the ambulance. This is the reason why we donate a percentage of our profits each month to the Wes Leonard Heart Team. The WLHT uses the funds they receive to purchase AED devices for schools. Kyle wrote an awesome story for his senior capstone about sudden cardiac arrest and athletes. It is a long read, but I encourage you to read it! If you read Kyle’s personal story, you will read about Sue Ross, who died of a heart attack during Kyle’s open heart surgery. Sue was our first sales rep for Polka Dot Mitten. It’s hard to understand why things happen, but they do! http://blogs.butler.edu/multimedia-jou…/longform/heartbreak/...
Stephanie Corfee :: Paint Lab for Kids

Stephanie Corfee :: Paint Lab for Kids

I am excited to announce that a piece of my artwork is published in a book called “Paint Lab for Kids”  by my friend Stephanie Corfee! I “met” Stephanie while taking an online course called Make Art that Sells by Lilla Rogers.  Over the past two years, a group of girls from the class and I have formed a friendship and we discuss the ups and downs of art business on a regular basis. I was so excited last year when Stephanie asked if we would like to contribute to her book! Of course I said I would! This is the artwork that I contributed: There are many talented artists in her book, which covers 52 different ways for kids to create unique paint projects. Each project gives step-by-step instructions and shows full color pictures. It’s a perfect gift for artists of all ages! Stephanie works from her home studio in Pennsylvania. Her style is colorful, whimsical, and full of detail. Her designs are licensed on many products that can be found in gift shops all over the country. We’re Going Up North!

We’re Going Up North!

Next week, we are planning on taking a road trip up north.  We’ll stop at many of the sweet little shops that carry Polka Dot Mitten goodies along the way. We’ll be staying in Traverse City, but I have a trunk show at Two Fish Gallery in Leland  on Friday the 17th from 1-4pm. I can’t wait to visit!  Leland has always been one of my favorite places in Michigan – I have been there numerous times.  We used to go all the time when I was a kid. Many times, we would go with my uncle and my cousin and stay at Falling Waters Lodge.  Lots of happy memories of Fishtown! I’ll post pictures after we get back next...
My New Studio

My New Studio

Our very first goal when we started Polka Dot Mitten in 2013 was to outgrow our kitchen counter.  My first rep, Sue, used to tell that to every store that bought our products.  She’d send me bunches of orders, and always say, “You’re young!  You don’t need sleep!”  And ever since then, our kitchen has always been piled high with stacks of signs and papers! (You can see all of my “outgrowing the kitchen counter” posts on Instagram.  Just search #outgrowingthekitchencounter and they will all show up!) We put up with the constant mess of shuffling papers and moving stacks of signs around, and DUST in the kitchen for 2 years and 3 months…. and finally we decided to turn our basement family room into a functional workspace. I’m so excited that we finally finished it last night! Take a peek at our new creative space!  The pictures aren’t the greatest – maybe I can get my photographer sister to take some good pictures next time she’s in town!  ...
It’s Been Awhile!

It’s Been Awhile!

Happy New Year!  I have been extremely busy.  I thought I’d be kicking back, enjoying the slow winter with not much to do.  Not so.  And I’m good with that!  I have created a TON of new artwork in the last 6 weeks.  I came out with a spring catalog, and I’ve had plenty of little orders to keep my from sitting around doing nothing.  Also, my parents took over our shop, It Is What It Is, and they are moving it to 318 Butler Street in Saugatuck!  We’re looking forward to a fun...

Cake Walk Success

Cake Walk Success

Sunday’s cake walk and fundraiser for the Wes Leonard Heart Team was a huge success!  The community was so generous that enough money was raised to buy 5 AED devices for Michigan schools! The goal was two, and that was completely blown away!  Many thanks to everyone who was able to attend or donate or help out in some way!  We will continue to donate a portion of our sales each month to this great...

Never Quit

Never Quit

I haven’t blogged much lately!  I am finally feeling like winter might be coming to an end!  We are busy with orders again!! Yay!  And we are open at the store again… we just got a bunch of new products in for the summer.  So I’ve been spending lots of time cleaning, re-arranging displaying, and making signs for orders.  I’ve also been taking Lilla Rogers’ Bootcamp.  I’ll do a special post about that next week when the March gallery goes live.  Bootcamp pauses for a month when Make Art that Sells Part B (MATS) starts on Monday, the 31st of March, and I’m excited to learn more! This is a quote my mom asked me to make for her back when my brother was in the hospital in January.  Today’s her...

{30}

I had a fun weekend in Traverse City celebrating my last days being 29. They had most of Front Street closed down for winter activities… there was a sledding hill, ferris wheel, ice skating, mini golf, and lots more going on!  I had a great time shopping in all the unique little shops. We also went wine tasting on Old Mission Peninsula.  I found a few new favorites! We had a nice dinner at Mission Table (and then learned about its creepy history)!  And we headed back into town to check out the ice sculptures at night. This one was my favorite: I found a really awesome app called Waterlogue.  It changes your photos into a watercolor painting: Today is my actual birthday.  I’m spending it at home with my daughter who isn’t feeling too good. :(Not what I was hoping for, but oh well.) It’s snowing like crazy outside, so I decided to work on my assignment for Lilla Rogers’ Make Art That Sells bootcamp.  We’re supposed to be drawing cuckoo clocks, but I keep getting a little side tracked.  This is the design I made today:  ...
