Painted Leaves

Painted Leaves

Just for fun, I decided it would be neat to paint on a dried leaf.  I love the combination of orange/brown and aqua.  I just used acrylic paint and a fine tip paintbrush.  It’ll be fun to try it with the kids!
Classic Childhood Games

Classic Childhood Games

So… I didn’t win the global talent search.  I didn’t even make it to the final round.  Oh well.  I still can’t believe I was in the top 50!   Anyway, back to creating.  Here’s what I’ve been working on this...
A New Addition to our Custom Signs!

A New Addition to our Custom Signs!

I’ve had many requests for custom baby artwork that doesn’t include all the stats (birth time, length, weight, etc).  Often, when people are out shopping for gifts, they don’t always have that information on hand.  This week, I finally came up with a simple design that just includes the baby’s first and middle name.  I think they’re pretty cute!  Email me at katie@shopwhatitis.com to customize one of these!...

Top Seven Sunday!

I’ve been trying to keep up with the blog.  But I’ve been having a hard time with that.  Ideally, I would post 5 times a week!  Instead, here are the top seven highlights of my week. 1. I’m going to be signing signs and doing 3 “trunk shows” in November.  At Teerman’s in Holland, at Shooting Star in South Haven, and at Great Northern Trading in Rockford.  I’ll post dates and more info later.   2.  We have been staying up until about 1 a.m.  every night/morning/whatever you want to call it.  It’s tough to work 2 jobs.  (ok 4 jobs between the two of us.  mike has a normal engineer job monday-friday and i work 7 days a week at the store most weeks, and we both make the signs every night!)  But it’s sooooooo exciting that we have to work so late every night.  My goal was to outgrow my kitchen counter.  And that is happening quickly.  I feel like I’m going insane mostly, but I asked for some help this week. Finally.  I took a picture of my kitchen counter, but I’m too embarrassed to post it.  Between the kids’ school papers, signs, regular mail, iiwii mail, polka dot mail, dirty dishes…. yeah.  You can make a mental picture.  But it makes my top 7 because I’m loving it. 3.  We took a break on Friday night!  We took the kids to the Saugatuck/Fennville football game!  We met our good friends there, and they came over to our house afterwards.  It was good to hang out and catch up with them.  They didn’t care about the...

A Day Off

I’ve been practicing some new techniques and I really like how they are turning out! The hardest part is coming up with a quote to put on them. I took the day off from It Is What It Is, and this is pretty much all I did.  Aside from shipping some packages and taking the kids out for ice cream… this was my day.  I really should have cleaned the laundry room….....

My week in review

My sister sent me this link about cutting out processed food.  I was happy to see that I can still drink wine.   I’ve had a super busy week- because it was the last week of school.  We had picnics and field trips and summer birthday celebrations going on…  It made the week fly by.  Thursday, I went on a field trip to the Star of Saugatuck and we also went on a Saugatuck scavenger hunt.  It was fun to walk around and find things in town that I always noticed as a kid, but kind of forgot about now that I’m a grown up.  I always get sad around the last day of school for the kids.  It just means they are growing up too fast! I went out to water my hanging flower baskets on my front porch on Saturday, and a robin flew out of one of the baskets!  She was pretty MAD.  So I had Mike check out the basket to see if there was a nest in there… and look what we found!!!  I have never seen un-hatched robins’ eggs before.  They looked fake!  Mike ended up moving the nest to a tree, so we wouldn’t get attacked every time we were on the front porch. I finally got around to updating my wholesale catalog so it’s current (for now).  Seems like whenever I get bored, I make something new to add to it.   I can’t wait to have another chunk of time because I have a few more ideas in my head!  But it requires making a huge mess, and my kitchen...

ABCs and 123s

Here’s a little sneak peek at what I’ve been working on this week: I have been working on a hand written alphabet. My great grandmother, Ruth, had the best handwriting.  She passed it on to my mom, who has beautiful handwriting as well. My mom taught me to write.  In 3rd grade, I remember my teacher letting me show the class how to write letters in cursive. I could spend hours just writing the letters of the alphabet in different ways.  I have always wanted to do something with my handwriting.  So I am creating an alphabet.  I am hoping it will be the first of many that I create. I think my kids may be taking after me with their penmanship, too! Caralyn, age (almost) 9 updates our kitchen chalkboard on a regular basis:And Will, who just turned 7, has great...
