Katie’s Apple Cake

Katie’s Apple Cake

September is just around the corner, and one of my favorite things about this time of year is making apple cake. Apple cake is one of the first things I learned to bake.  It was also one of the first things my mom learned to bake.  Her neighbor, Mrs. Troutman, gave her the recipe when she was little.  And my mom taught me how to make it when I was little.  I remember making it for my neighbors, Mr. and Mrs. Nieusma, when I was probably about 8 years old. Just thought I’d share my favorite recipe with my favorite people! Here it...
“Who Inspires Me?”  {A Blog Hop}

“Who Inspires Me?” {A Blog Hop}

A few weeks ago, my incredibly talented friend Harriet Mellor featured me on her blog as part of the “Who Inspires Me? Blog Hop.”  I was so flattered and honored!  You can read her post here. I met Harriet in a Make Art that Sells class that we both took from Lilla Rogers last fall.  I have always admired Harriet’s work.  She has a very distinct style.  It’s delicate, yet bold at the same time. She has lived in many countries around the world, and her rich background shows up beautifully in her work!  She also has a great sense of humor.   These are a few of my favorite pieces: This was the piece that got her a place in the top 50 for the Global Talent Search.  It reminds me of a vintage seed packet:   Harriet recently had her artwork licensed with Phoenix Trading.  Look at this great embossed card!   Click here to visit Harriet’s website and blog to see more of her stunning work! ***** Now I have to answer a few questions about myself: QUESTION #1 WHAT ARE YOU WORKING ON RIGHT NOW? Right now I am working like crazy on lots of wholesale orders.  Gift shops are gearing up for the holidays, and they are beginning to re-stock their polka dot mitten products.  (you should see the mess that is our kitchen and garage right now!)  In my spare time, I have been trying to design some greeting cards and coordinate patterns. I’d love to start submitting my art to card companies, and/or produce my own greeting cards for wholesale. QUESTION #2 WHY DO YOU...
Heartfelt Thanks

Heartfelt Thanks

    As many of you know, January was a rough month for my family.  My brother underwent unexpected open heart surgery to repair a leaking valve.  He was born with a heart condition, and has had two surgeries to fix it in the past. But this third surgery was very unexpected.  That same day, my first rep, Sue Ross, passed away from a heart attack.  I wanted to share this letter that my brother wrote.  He writes for the Butler Collegian at Butler University, and he has a way with words: On Behalf of the Beery Family, Larry Cimino, Susan Chappell Ross, her families and friends: My name is Kyle Beery, Iʼm a 22-year-old from Saugatuck, Michigan . I am currently a junior at Butler University in Indianapolis, recently recovering from an open-heart surgery in January of this year. This most recent, and unexpected surgery was my third (and hopefully last). It was my second open heart surgery in three years to replace my pulmonary valve. My familyʼs dear friend Sue Ross died of a heart attack on January 16 , 2014, the very same day I had my open heart surgery – and it hit all of us who knew her pretty hard. Sue had her own company, Sue Ross Sales. She represented well over 200 lines of merchandise that you see in our local stores. We were in Indianapolis when we heard about Sueʼs death, and it was very hard on us because the weather made it impossible for my parents to drive back to Saugatuck. With friends and family all over the country, like us,...
Round 2: Semi-Finals!

Round 2: Semi-Finals!

As you know, my “Find Joy In The Ordinary” piece made it into the top 50 for Lilla Rogers’ Global Talent Search.  I was so excited!     Here is why I have been sharing so many pictures of Paisley lately!  She was my inspiration for my children’s art piece for round 2!  I would love it if you could go vote!  Here is the link:  http://lillarogers.com/gts-2014-round-2/      ...
Autumn in Michigan 2014

Autumn in Michigan 2014

Today seems like an appropriate day to introduce this year’s Autumn in Michigan sign!  We are having another polar vortex here in west Michigan.  It’s July 15th, and it’s cold and rainy.  I really don’t mind this weather, though, because Fall is my favorite season. This sign will be available in two sizes: 8×10″ and 4×5.”  In an effort to get myself a little more than caught up for Fall (since I always make everything to order and go a little bit crazy trying to keep up), I am going to take pre-orders for these at an earlybird sale price, and they will begin shipping at the end of August!  They can be customized to any state or town. Stay tuned in the coming weeks for the Christmas in Michigan sign, which will also begin shipping at the end of...
