Love you to London and Back

Love you to London and Back

I’ve been having SO much fun creating new artwork for the new year.  Here’s a new customize-able print that is currently available in my etsy shop, and will also be available in gift shops around Michigan in 2015.  It can be customized to any city, state, or...
New Product Experiments!

New Product Experiments!

I have been experimenting with some new products for 2015!  I made some sandstone coasters and a glass cutting board with my artwork!  I listed some of it in my Etsy shop, and if it keeps going well, it will be available in the Spring 2015 Polka Dot Mitten catalog.  Check it...
Random Things

Random Things

I haven’t posted in a while!  Here’s a little roundup of what I’ve been up to: My hyperlush assignment for MATS this week: We have a lot of snow in Michigan for November 20th!   I am in love with this gold paint:   Here is my wall art assignment for MATS from last week (using said gold paint): My husband built me a really awesome faux fireplace for our front room !!  I LOVE IT. I was supposed to go to a signing last night at Great Northern Trading Company, but the wind was howling and it was snowing… so I was a little concerned about driving an hour in the dark in that junk.  I was really looking forward to the meet and greet.   I’ve been practicing typography daily in November.  You can follow it on instagram by searching for...
Baking is Love Made Edible.

Baking is Love Made Edible.

With Thanksgiving coming up soon, I wanted to make a kitchen-themed piece of art.  I used some of the elements from my kitchen fabric design to come up with this piece of wall art.  It’s available in my etsy...
I Love Michigan Summers

I Love Michigan Summers

Although I love Fall and Christmas season very, very much… I have been starting to design some new artwork for next year’s Polka Dot Mitten catalog.  It’s going to be the best yet!  Here is a sneak peek of one of the first new designs.  (If you just can’t wait for summer before you get your hands on one of these, I can make you one now!  It would make a great Christmas gift! 😉 ) It’s available here in two...
Choose to Be Thankful

Choose to Be Thankful

To celebrate a month of gratitude, this mini art block is just $9.50 for the whole month of November (regularly $12.50). It would make a cute little addition to your Thanksgiving decor! Available here: http://etsy.me/1xOb8im and...
Bolt Fabric and Personal Growth Comparison

Bolt Fabric and Personal Growth Comparison

I just finished my first week of Make Art That Sells – round two!  I decided to take the course again to see how much more I could learn.  I think I learned a considerable amount from it last year. This was my very first MATS piece, which I designed for bolt fabric, in 2013.  I was so proud of it!  I even ordered some fabric with this design from Spoonflower.  I made this exactly a year ago: I still think my first MATS piece is kind of cute (I do like the colors)… but now I have had sooooo much more practice.  Here is how my year 2 “root veggies and casseroles” bolt fabric piece turned...
Painted Leaves

Painted Leaves

Just for fun, I decided it would be neat to paint on a dried leaf.  I love the combination of orange/brown and aqua.  I just used acrylic paint and a fine tip paintbrush.  It’ll be fun to try it with the kids!
Bless this Mess

Bless this Mess

My kitchen is never clean.  I’m thankful for that!  Over the past few days, I have made an entire collection based on my messy kitchen.  I’ll share more of it over the next few weeks.  This was the main piece: I framed it and set it on my counter. Right now it’s available as a wood-mounted print in my etsy shop.  Hopefully someday it can be...
“Who Inspires Me?”  {A Blog Hop}

“Who Inspires Me?” {A Blog Hop}

A few weeks ago, my incredibly talented friend Harriet Mellor featured me on her blog as part of the “Who Inspires Me? Blog Hop.”  I was so flattered and honored!  You can read her post here. I met Harriet in a Make Art that Sells class that we both took from Lilla Rogers last fall.  I have always admired Harriet’s work.  She has a very distinct style.  It’s delicate, yet bold at the same time. She has lived in many countries around the world, and her rich background shows up beautifully in her work!  She also has a great sense of humor.   These are a few of my favorite pieces: This was the piece that got her a place in the top 50 for the Global Talent Search.  It reminds me of a vintage seed packet:   Harriet recently had her artwork licensed with Phoenix Trading.  Look at this great embossed card!   Click here to visit Harriet’s website and blog to see more of her stunning work! ***** Now I have to answer a few questions about myself: QUESTION #1 WHAT ARE YOU WORKING ON RIGHT NOW? Right now I am working like crazy on lots of wholesale orders.  Gift shops are gearing up for the holidays, and they are beginning to re-stock their polka dot mitten products.  (you should see the mess that is our kitchen and garage right now!)  In my spare time, I have been trying to design some greeting cards and coordinate patterns. I’d love to start submitting my art to card companies, and/or produce my own greeting cards for wholesale. QUESTION #2 WHY DO YOU...

Giveaway!

Fall is my favorite time of year!  I just ordered some journal / sketchbooks with my “hello” bird artwork on them, and I love how they turned out!  I might consider selling these in the future!  But for now, I’m giving one away to one lucky winner.  I’m also giving away a mini 4×5 tag with my new “Fall In Love” artwork to one lucky winner.  To enter, comment on this post, or on my Instagram post with the same picture.  I’ll draw a winner tomorrow, October 2nd, 2014!  Good...
What’s Up?

What’s Up?

After finding out that I did not make it to the final round of Lilla Rogers’ Global Talent Search, I was honestly bummed.  I never expected to make it to the top 50.  But I did.  Then I got my hopes up that I might make it to the top 6 as well.  At the same time, I was trying to prepare myself for inevitable disappointment. I thought I was ready for the bad news.  But there’s not really a good way to not be disappointed about something so BIG that could have been career-changing.  I didn’t feel like creating ANYTHING for a lot of days after that.  I wasn’t depressed or anything, and really, I got over not being picked in a matter of one day.  But I still felt burnt out on everything.  There was so much anticipation about which 6 artists would be chosen, and so much hype, and then it was instantly over. It meant that I had to go back to my piles and piles of signs that had been patiently waiting for me to finish and ship out all over Michigan.  Not that I don’t love what I’m doing.  It just felt old and stale.  It made me wonder if my art was really very good at all… or if people just placed orders simply because it’s made in Michigan and not in China. So I didn’t create anything at all for quite a few days.  I rearranged my living room, put up Fall decorations, boiled some apple peels with cinnamon to make the house smell good.  I went to bed early… It was...
Happy Friday!

Happy Friday!

Happy Friday!!!  I have several new art pieces that I created today.  I’ll be adding them to my portfolio over the next week or so.  Stay tuned!  In the meantime, enjoy the weekend
Morning Coffee in the Fall

Morning Coffee in the Fall

This time of year, I’m thankful to have a free hour in the morning after my kids hop on the bus, before I have to start getting ready for the day.  Lately, I’ve been having a cup of coffee and painting, doodling, or drawing something.  It’s pretty much the only time I get to create new art.  Here’s what I made in honor of the first week of Fall, my favorite time of year!   This art print is available in my etsy shop or at shopwhatitis.com.  It’s an 8×10 art print mounted to wood, and can hang from a keyhole slot drilled in the back, or it can stand alone on a...
Classic Childhood Games

Classic Childhood Games

So… I didn’t win the global talent search.  I didn’t even make it to the final round.  Oh well.  I still can’t believe I was in the top 50!   Anyway, back to creating.  Here’s what I’ve been working on this...
Cake Walk Success

Cake Walk Success

Sunday’s cake walk and fundraiser for the Wes Leonard Heart Team was a huge success!  The community was so generous that enough money was raised to buy 5 AED devices for Michigan schools! The goal was two, and that was completely blown away!  Many thanks to everyone who was able to attend or donate or help out in some way!  We will continue to donate a portion of our sales each month to this great...
Heartfelt Thanks

Heartfelt Thanks

As many of you know, January was a rough month for my family.  My brother underwent unexpected open heart surgery to repair a leaking valve.  He was born with a heart condition, and has had two surgeries to fix it in the past. But this third surgery was very unexpected.  That same day, my first rep, Sue Ross, passed away from a heart attack.  I wanted to share this letter that my brother wrote.  He writes for the Butler Collegian at Butler University, and he has a way with words: On Behalf of the Beery Family, Larry Cimino, Susan Chappell Ross, her families and friends: My name is Kyle Beery, Iʼm a 22-year-old from Saugatuck, Michigan . I am currently a junior at Butler University in Indianapolis, recently recovering from an open-heart surgery in January of this year. This most recent, and unexpected surgery was my third (and hopefully last). It was my second open heart surgery in three years to replace my pulmonary valve. My familyʼs dear friend Sue Ross died of a heart attack on January 16 , 2014, the very same day I had my open heart surgery – and it hit all of us who knew her pretty hard. Sue had her own company, Sue Ross Sales. She represented well over 200 lines of merchandise that you see in our local stores. We were in Indianapolis when we heard about Sueʼs death, and it was very hard on us because the weather made it impossible for my parents to drive back to Saugatuck. With friends and family all over the country, like us,...
